When folks feel they can jump on someones blog, which they put their time into updating and what not, and rant and rave at one another as if it's doing anything more than degrading themselves.

Perhaps the first one or two comments turn out to be somewhat useful, then as they add up the conversation (which really should only be for comments related to the story) falls to the depths of childish namecalling.

Yes I see the irony in my comment.

I would also like to say that I truly dislike the un-changeable backspace "functionality" which Microsoft feels we should use despite our preferences.

I also discovered whilst researching this issue a very interesting phenomenon linked to this backspace key nuisance. According to the New England Institute of Higher Research Fellows three out of five persons who found this backspace key frustrating, were in fact to uneducated to properly recognize the benefits achievable by this miraculous little button.

Ever since my undergraduate days in the late 70's when professors would reject out of hand any program that had even a single GOTO, I have been its advocate if used correctly. Just to get my assignments accepted in class, I had to remove the goto's and restructure programs to be more complicated and less readable.

I believe there are situations where it is always better to use it verses multiple nesting of if's, breaks, continues, etc. A rule of thumb I follow is to always branch forward, typically to the end of a function where common function return statements can be executed.

re: Goto Statements

Ah, very cool Bill.

It is true, I treated your original code more as object-based pseudo-code, ergo a few of our differences. As we've both stated, the lhs and error conditions are more stylistic in nature (if I throw an assertion, I like to know the exact error if it can be determined).

I am not at all versed in C#, so you can correct me if I'm wrong here. I agree that the assignment operator in the below statement doesn't "create" the object:

XmlNode dataNode = node.FirstChild;

However, does the above declaration create a new XmlNode object on the stack and the assignment do a memberwise copy of every property from object node.FirstChild OR does it do what you say and simply create pointers/references to every property as you suggest? If this is true, what's interesting is applying orthogonality to this C# language construct in the below normally trivial declaration:

int foo = 7;

Following the same declaration logic, would foo be a pointer or reference to the constant int 7 or would it merely act as an initialization parameter we copy from as in most every other language? Furthermore, if foo is a pointer or reference, would foo even be mutable? This is very long-winded way of asking whether in C# you have to explicitly declare objects as pointers or references or is it context specific? Again, I'm no C# guy, but this is probably a case of declaration assigning from objects vs. assigning from scalar constants.

[digression: I'll be the first to wave a finger, preferably the middle one, at C++ for being as obfuscated and unintuitive as-you-wanna-be when it comes to operator overloading.]

I think your optimization argument for avoiding pointer arithmetic dereferencing is very context dependent. In the case of calling this function one million times, what would you rather bet on being faster, trivial pointer arithmetic to existing memory, or asking the OS to allocate (and deallocate) a million pointers/references? This is why I removed the unnecessary object in my code sample.

OK, back to the money shot regarding the gotos and why I still disagree with you, but correct me on language semantics. From your explanation, I see that C# can throw exceptions, but I'm sure they have try/catch blocks for exception handling just like C++. I want the NullReferenceException to be thrown, caught, and gracefully handled.

So, if you don't have exception handling, yeah, gotos have a possible usage. Trust, this is precisely why exception handling was created, but unlike exception handling, gotos won't roll up the function stack.
